New Ink Part 1

So my office is much like other offices around the country I think. People will set out food for anyone to eat and it will be devoured in minutes. I mean it can be the nastiest shit around. One time people left out cooked hot dogs. Not that big of a deal right? Well some of them sat there for like 4 hours. But by the end of the day they were all gone. If its candy, forget about it. You might even get mowed over by the old dude who normally can’t get out of his chair. When there is free food on the line, all bets are off.
And we are off to San Diego. I'll get to hang out with one of my best buddies and his lady friend. I'll only have a beach cruiser to ride, though I still plan on riding up Mt. Soledad with it. Think I wont? After we reach the summit I plan on shotgunning a beer and then bombing the hill all the way to Pacific Beach. I'm taking a wise mans advice in regards to "training" while out in SD. Instead of hauling the bike out there and riding hard, it will be much nicer to ride the beach cruiser with cocktails in hand. If I can remember I'll take pictures and post next week.
So yesterday G was flying back from OH and wasn’t scheduled to be back till around 9:00 pm. I figured I would go home after work, get my gear and head to the Y. I had to do an 1800 meter swim, and then a 50 minute run. I brought some food for between workouts and figured my timing would be perfect. Besides, by the time I was finished in the pool the mad rush for the cardio would have passed and I would have my pick of treadmills. The swim went pretty good. I had been out of the water for a few days so I felt a little slow, but overall it was a good workout. I showered off the chlorine and then headed to change into my running gear. I grabbed my insoles and put them into one of my shoes and realized it didn’t fit so well. Ahh, I put it in the wrong shoe. So, I pulled it out and tried putting it in the other shoe, still no fit. I looked down at them and couldn’t figure out what was wrong with the picture. You see I have multiple, I mean a ton of running shoes. I always get the same model, and if purchased in close enough proximity, before they change the style, the same color. After I was able to get enough oxygen and recovery to my head after the swim, I realized I brought two left shoes…..Awesome.
So last night after work I was supposed to do a long swim workout. Well, that didn’t really happen. I looked at the weather around 4:30 and saw that it was near 50, so I took off from work a little early and busted ass home. I made a quick change and took off on the bike. I just added fenders a few weeks ago and last night was a perfect night to put them to use. I had one of those great rides where at times you are just spinning along and totally lost in your thoughts. Then something makes you snap back into reality and you realize you have a super big smile on your face. You fall in love with the bike all over again. It’s been a long winter. Yesterday was the warmest day in 4 months. I can’t wait for consistent warm temps, all the snow to be gone, and getting back out on a geared bike. I was out for over two hours and felt like I could have gone for more.
So this weekend I had a two hour trainer ride that I was NOT looking forward to. I mean two hours on the trainer feels like about like 4. So to get myself motivated I went to REI and used my dividend to get the video What It Takes. Basically the video is a documentary that follows four professional triathletes over the course of a season leading up to the 2005 IM World Championship. It was a great way to pass 96 minutes of the ride. I recommend it to anyone that finds triathlon interesting. I wished the video went into more detail on their actual training, but the intended audience is the general public. Overall it’s really interesting and enjoyable. In one part of the movie they show Peter Reid riding up Mt. Lemmon in AZ. G and I are heading there at the end of April so it got me totally psyched for that trip. Other weekend highlights were a 1:20 minute run, a solid swim workout, and some Yoga.
